Is egg donation right for you? The dedicated donation team at Egg Donors UK answer your most common questions

If you are thinking about egg donation, this blog will help guide you step by step through what it means to donate eggs and answer all your questions about the donation journey.

Who are Egg Donors UK?

Egg Donors UK is a leading egg donation programme, which is part of Manchester Fertility clinic. Our donation programme was established in 2015 to help meet the increasing needs of people across the country who needed donor assistance to start or grow their families.

Our experienced team of fertility experts are passionate about what they do and offer the same high-quality care to egg donors as they do to patients undergoing fertility treatment. We provide donors throughout the UK with a convenient and supportive donation experience.

Thanks to our dedicated donor team and expanding network of locations, we are making it easy to begin your donation journey close to home.

Why are egg donors needed?

Unfortunately, fertility issues are more common than you might think, with 1 in 7 couples having difficulty conceiving.

For some people, fertility treatment with an egg donor will be their only chance to carry a child. According to statistics from The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority, in 2021, there were 1,830 cycles of fertility treatment with donor eggs conducted in the UK, this would not have been possible without the selfless people choosing to donate.

How does egg donation work?

Egg donation is a truly altruistic act. If you choose to donate, you'll be supporting couples or individuals who dream of having children. The whole process takes around three months, from your first appointment to egg collection. While it's not quick, our team are here to make your journey smooth and straightforward. The process of donating can be broken down into 6 steps;

  1. Apply to be an egg donor via our online form and have a telephone implications appointment
  2. Egg donor eligibility screening at your nearest clinic
  3. Virtual donor counselling and consultation appointments followed by genetic blood tests
  4. Preparing for egg collection supported by our donation nurses
  5. Egg collection at our South Manchester clinic
  6. Completing your donation and receiving compensation

Who can be an Egg Donor?

To ensure that donors, recipients, and every baby born from donation are well-protected we ask that all donors meet our eligibility criteria.

Why should I become an egg donor?

Egg donation is a great way to help create a family. Our donors often say knowing the part they have played in the family-building process is the best part of their donation.

The feeling of knowing my donated eggs contributed to successful pregnancies is indescribable

– Samantha

You can read more about why our previous donors chose egg donation as the right option for them in our donor stories.

If you proceed with donating your eggs, you will become part of the same Egg Donors UK community. Donors will also receive compensation for the time and commitment required to become an egg donor.

What compensation do egg donors receive?

Donors receive £985 per donation cycle. A donation cycle includes one round of treatment, starting with suitability tests and ending with an egg collection. This fixed compensation allows donors to cover any potential costs that donors may incur during the process such as, travel, time spent at appointments or childcare.

Regardless of the personal cost they may incur during the process, each donor receives the same £985 to reflect the time and commitment of becoming a donor.

Where can I become an egg donor?

Our growing network of satellite locations means you may be able to start your egg donation journey in your local area. With initial appointments and scans available near you, we are making egg donation more accessible, this minimises the number of appointments required at the Manchester clinic.
